sangria granita

Yield: About 12 small servings

Rating: Really easy! But does require some attention over a period of 5 hours to scrape the mixture - but super simple and delicious.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons raw cane sugar

4 tablespoons cold water

1 cup cabernet sauvignon or other dry red wine

1 cup cold water

1 pound frozen mixed berries

1 whole orange, segmented

2/3 cup fresh squeezed orange juice (use bottled if you prefer)

1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon

Directions:

To make your simple syrup - put your sugar and 4 tablespoons of water into a small pot and bring up to a boil.  Stir the liquid to ensure the sugar has dissolved. Cool completely.

Put your wine, 1 cup of water, berries, orange segments, orange juice, simple syrup and cinnamon in a blender.  Mix on high for 1 minute until everything is blended really well.  Pour the mixture into a bakeware dish like a Pyrex. ( I even poured it into cake pans because I was low on dishes.) Cover with foil or plastic and freeze for 1 hour.  Stir the berry mixture with a fork every hour for 5 hours. Store in the freezer until ready to serve.

When you want to serve scrape the mixture with a fork until fluffy.

Plan Ahead:

This dish will stay up to 3 months in the freezer if it is well wrapped.
